i am entering into the unknown world of blogging. up until recently, my attitude towards the act has been narrow and cynical. but after months of membership in the cory driver fan club, i have begun to think differently. it’s actually a lot of FUN! and, with some prodding from the man himself, i’ve decided to dive in and take a swim.
so for the past year, i’ve been a big fan of “The Way I See It” on my starbucks cups. as intended, it sparks conversation, thought, inspiration, and recognition of stupidity among the nation. =) today’s cup had #242:
Children are born with such a sense of fairness that they will accept no less than equal treatment for all. I know – I have three. I hope that as they grow, they keep that sense of justice and learn to challenge the old adage “life’s not fair.” It should be, in so far as we have control of it.”
–Beth Vanden Hoek (starbucks asst mgr, st. louis)
i disagree with beth. young or old, i think our nature is to be selfish and to overlook when the scales of “fairness” are tipped our way. if i’m passing out candy to my class and i give friedrich an extra piece, he’s not going to object. i would say that kids seem to have more compassion for each other than adults do. somewhere in the aging process, we tend to lose it and have to make a conscience decision to go back.
it’s not one of my favorite quotes from the cup but it made me think and so here i am.
(ps-i don’t know how to change the font.)
(pps-it would be misleading to let you think this is my very first time. i lost it to xanga many moons ago…)

YAY! Exciting stuff…but you little turkey –why didn’t you tell me you had a xanga account. I think I will call you “closet blogger” from now on.
Looking forward to more from my favorite Lissie.

By the way — how come the links are “on the nightstand?”

kinda like what you’re reading now is on your nightstand by your bed…not that we all have nightstands but still. =)
no good?
and i was really just a social blogger before…i hadn’t embraced it as my own. plus, to those who know things, xanga can’t be taken seriously. and you couldn’t leave me lovin!

I am typing under duress. My mind shut off several hours ago when I should have gone to bed. So, to comment on the blog, (where did that word come from; btw, no one’s been able to answer me on that and i’m too lazy or disinterested to look it up) I think that we’re all born selfish and we only use the “fairness” argument when things are unfair to the other person’s advantage. As Lissie said, no kid is going to complain when they get more candy than their classmates. They may, however, complain that their parents named them after the Von Trapp kids in the Sound of Music.
In reference to kids having more compassion for their fellow man (as sexist as that phrase may be) than adults, I heartily agree. I know a developmentally disabled person who is very friendly to everyone he meets. When meeting him, it seems strange that he hasn’t developed the cynicism that usually comes with adulthood. I feel like I should have more to say, but I can’t think of anything.
So, Lissie, what font would you choose, if you could? I believe that fonts tell a lot about a person!

cory: i did not receive a button nor a poster. however, if you’d like to make up for the club managers dropping the ball, a moroccan street sign would make a nice addition to my collection.
joy: i like your attention to detail, even when under supposed “duress”. i was torn between friedrich and lisel. =) also, blog is kinda like spork and ginormous…two words put together. web+log=blog it’s called a pormanteau.
as for my font of choice, it would depend on the offerings. i don’t have a concrete favorite. my preferred font for emailing is georgia. something slightly round and friendly looking.
