leftovers

hey guys!  i’m back!  did you miss me?!
ha….that’s a silly question.  of course you did! ;)

well, here i am.  at least for now…for this moment.  i make no promises yet.
but i will say, the fact that my mind has started thinking in blog form again is a good sign for us all.

the past few months have been full of all kinds of things that distracted me from sharing sweet nothings. things like…
~ending my job and packing up 7 years of teaching shtuff to put in my garage,zucchini_round
~being ok with being sad over saying goodbye to 15 little darlings and other relationships,
~eating the veggies from my garden (like monster pumpkin zucchini),
~road tripping to jersey with john and the little boys (wishing i had my go girl with me to give me equal powers),
~poolside, stress-relieving, sun-embracing, non-stop talking hh with my girls,
~getting back into the student groove,
~whining that my finger is STILL not fully recovered (that’s right, i can’t even snap!),
~beating my brother at scramble (helping me pretend i’m not actually at the bottom of that game’s food chain),
~realizing i can’t and don’t have to worry myself over other people’s behavior (yes, word of the year, i haven’t forgotten you!),
~more than enjoying the asian invasion that fills my time (including the visit from yogi!!!!),
and, best of all,
~continuing to learn more about how to rest, delight in, and share God’s perfect grace and love.

:)

ok…i think i’ve rambled on sufficiently for you to feel like i’m truly back. (you know you missed my wordiness too!)

so i get to my point.

this morning, i cooked me up some delicious, healthy-ish french toast.  as i was finishing it up, there was a little leftover egg and this always makes me happy.  i cook it up in the pan and revel in its yumminess.  it was gooooood.

however, it made me recall a breakfasty leftover that i despise.
leftover cereal milk.

YUCK!

for the longest time, i ate my cereal dry and it wasn’t cause i didn’t like it wet.  i actually thought the milk was a nice touch.  it was the drinking of the leftover milk that put me over the edge.  ugh…soggy floaties waiting to be swallowed down?!  NO THANKS!

i think i’ve talked to my mom about it since and she doesn’t recall making me drink the milk.  but something must’ve happened that made me think it was mandatory, putting the fear of dumping and wasting the excess deep in my soul.

many moons later…we’re talking college…i finally learned that it was easy to pour just the right amount of milk to not have any leftover in the bowl.   but until then, the thought of drinking that grossness was more than i could take so crunchy and dry was my style.

if only i’d known about this.

tell me…do you like it?  do you like floatie-infused cereal milk?

=)

Ew- gross. Does that say it all? Derryk, however, likes his cereal that way and pours tons of milk in his bowl and then lets the cereal sit so it gets soggy. Disgusting. This reminded me of a time when I was working at a Christian camp and after breakfast, the campers would pour all of their liquids into one container before dumping the other contents of their tray into the trash. This meant milk from cereal, juice, coffee, etc, all went into one bucket. A bet was placed between two campers and for $20, one had to drink a glass of this liquid and there had to be chunks. Yuck! I wonder if he thought afterward that it was worth $20.

This made me laugh because I decided this week to start eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast every day for the next little while. Normally I don’t eat breakfast at all, and there are lots of days when I am too tired at lunch and choose nap over eating (which is probably because I didn’t eat breakfast!), so I thought this would be a healthy habit to start. The thing is, I don’t like milk at all. It makes me sick. And just the thought of soggy cereal is enough to make me nauseaus. Ugh. So, every day for the last 3 days, I have poured a bowl of Cheerios (hey, I have a 2 year old, it is what is in the pantry!), put some sugar over it, and poured the milk. Then it is like a mad race to hurry and eat all the cheerios with just enough milk/sugar to make them sweet before they get too soft. If one of the kids needs something halfway through the bowl, they just have to wait. Then I dump a nice, at least half full bowl of milk down the sink. But I don’t care- it’s just way too gross to think about drinking it. yuck.

  6. Jen Says:

btw- I am so glad you’re back! :)

  7. Kevin Says:

Nope, it’s gross. I refuse to drink it.

  8. cory Says:

Seriously? I can’t believe there’s a market for this eatmecrunchy thing! I never thought twice about the cereal milk…I always just drank it. It seems, though, that I’m in the minority, or perhaps the silent majority? Cereal milk drinkers, those who neither delight nor despise it, are you out there? Join me, and make yourselves known!

  11. field Says:

I’m okay with the leftover milk. I read somewhere that much of the vitamins that are fortified into our cereals washes off into the milk, so it’s best to drink it if you want to recover all of those goodies.

My favorite cereal right now is a combination of Kellogg’s Special K and Post Selects Great Grains with Crunchy Pecans. The latter is kind of a premium health-nut cereal, but it’s so tasty. Who doesn’t like pecans and multi-grain crunchies!?

Back to the subject of the leftover floaties… Not all cereals hold up equally in milk over a given period of time. The crunchy pecan cereal holds up pretty well. Special K, less so. But that’s why I put the Special K on the top and the crunchy pecan underneath. The latter props up the former above the milk line. As I eat, with my spoon as a backhoe, I gradually demolish/erode chunks of the Special K into my lake-o-milk, mix, and then eat.

Goodness. I put a lot of thought into these things and don’t even realize it.

  12. lissie Says:

i love the thought put into your cereal habits, field. that’s awesome! haha.
(and i now have to admit that i started this comment before finishing yours and JUST read the last sentence and see that i’m basically repeating you but that’s ok. =)

your cereal combo sounds yummy. i’m a big fan of combining different cereals as well but i haven’t really been a consistent cereal eater since college which is when i discovered kix for the first time and thought i was in heaven. (yeah…i was cereal deprived as a youngin’. no cereal. no nintendo. it was tough in the horvath house. ) anywho…those, mixed with the…i don’t know what they were called. the 5 diff’t kinds of cheerios. i loved it!

i ate special K in there somewhere as well. i think you’ve got a good thing going with your breakfast. sounds tasty.

  13. knuckles Says:

I’m a cereal killer…well, first, you had to have a coupon to buy a box of cereal. Bonus if the cereal was on sale. Double bonus if it was double/triple your coupon day. The only cereal I can think of _not_ killing was Crap Stuff…Oh, I mean Grape Nuts. I remember seeing a commercial where everyone looked sooo happy eating Grape Nuts that I had to get it. Needless to say, I don’t think it was finished. Maybe Dad ate it.

Onto brighter things. List of tasty cereals (in no specific order): Golden Grahams, Corn Pops, Kix, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes, Corn Flakes, Raisin Bran, Chex, Crispix…I can’t remember anymore. AND, I’m a milk drinker. That’s right. Mmmmmmmmm…slurp-slurp, gulp-gulp. Don’t waste.

One last note, because it’s me. And it’s related to soggy cereal; nobody likes soggy cereal. Is it wrong, when you’re eating your cereal, and it becomes _that_ time, that you bring your cereal with you? heehee…hahaha. I’m gross.

  14. Jennifer Says:

I love cereal of all kinds, and I purposefully put too much milk in it so that I can have a very good reason to eat more cereal because I can’t possibly waste milk like that, especially when it’s almost the price of liquid gold at this point. Now on soggy vs. crunchy – it all depends on the cereal. For flakes, no way, for sugar cereals, it doesn’t really matter except for one – when it comes to capt. crunch cereals I prefer soggy because if it’s crunchy, it will tear the roof of your mouth up to shreds. I have many times been the victim of capt. crunch syndrome.

  15. Jen Says:

knuckles- yes, that is wrong. DO NOT SHARE THAT IN CYBERSPACE. :)
But I have to say that Cinnamon Toast Crunch is probably the best cereal ever made. (still can’t do soggy though)
Jennifer- I am glad I am not the only one who gets crazy cut up mouth from Cap’N Cruch. Not that I wish it on you, just glad to hear I am normal. But I still prefer the bleeding mouth to sogginess. Just can’t do it.

  16. lissie Says:

knuckles–you somehow know the perfect timing to share such lovely tidbits without scaring me away. that’s a skill. =P and it’s actually the “Mmmmmmmmm…slurp-slurp, gulp-gulp.” that grosses me out! ha

j^2–i don’t think i’ve ever had cap’n crunch but i can’t imagine a cereal worth bleeding mouth. that seems more sick than taking your cereal to the potty with you! ;)

when i would visit my grandma horvath in ohio, she had count chocula and i loved it! do they still make that one?
and i shouldn’t say i was completely deprived at home. by the time i left for college, my mom went a little crazy and, on occasion, bought frosted mini wheats and sometimes even fruit loops! =O

  17. Tracy Says:

of COURSE they still make count chocula!

I love your cousin. ( and for some reason she thinks im cool- which makes me giggle, but like her more)

GOLDEN GRAHAMS and CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH are the BEST cereals to drink the leftover milk!!!!!! I am ALL ABOUT LEFT OVER MILK.. I all caps for emphasis.

Nothing is better than washing your mouth clean with overtly sugared milk that tastes faintly like what you just crunched- or mushed if it *did* get soggy- into your mouth!

YAY SOGGY CEREAL! YAY LEFTOVER MILK! YAY GOLDEN GRAHAMS! YAY CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH!!

*phew* I think I made my point!

  18. Tracy Says:

o and ironic that you felt the mandatory push to not waste the milk— reflected in your recycling naziness*
