yet another reason why i love matt

in the midst of the curriculum project frenzy of my day, my gmail notifier dinged that i had email.  always ready for a break, i clicked over to check what it was.
there in my inbox sat mail from K.  subject: hippy deo.

a little backstory for ya:
for years, i’d been messing with different deodorants to try and find one that wouldn’t leave me with cancer or alzheimer’s but also actually worked…a most arduous task.  after i heard of someone successfully making their own, i took a turn with the homemade brew.  it seemed to work for a while but after i grew tired of smelling like rancid cocoa butter, i went back to the poisonous secret.

so, with that in the past, i clicked the link in the email, read and found matt nathanson’s post on hippy deodorant to be quite humorous.

after a failed attempt with some new stuff, this is what matt has to say: Read the rest of this entry »

is there a doctor in the house!?

we may just be tv fixer and unemployed by day
but last night, chris and i became doctors…

…and little, old maggie was our victim patient.

as some of you know, i’ve pretty much been talking about her imminent death for about 4 years.  not the entire 4 years but definitely on and off and well…i’m back on again.

it’s not just me being crazy.
there was the time that she deemed it necessary to vomit on my off-white carpet at least once a day…for months!!  not fun.  it wasn’t until i’d exhausted the vet and talked to a student’s mom that i discovered she had acid reflux.

then, there’s the limping with doggie arthritis.  that seems to be like selective hearing though.  she can be all rickety walking to go out in the morning but then she’s like a lightening bolt on her way back in for breakfast.

lately, she’s been hiding, no matter where we are.  in the closets, corners, under the desk.  if there’s a nook, she’s probably there.
somewhere, i’ve heard dogs go someplace to hide and die.  every time i have to go look for her, i know she’s going to be dead.

patriotism, coffee, and healthy tips

jury-duty-stamp1this morning, i headed up to georgetown for the first time in a while because i was summoned for jury duty.
at first, i was kinda excited by this.  it seemed all cool and patriotic and i imagined myself in a john grisham novel.
as i was driving up there, i slowly began to reconsider.  thinking of all of the things i’d rather do with my time, hours of sitting with strangers, and the potential for listening to the account of some crime i’d rather not know about…suddenly, i thought this whole thing kinda sucked.
however, i’m lucky to technically be a full-time student and, thereby, exempt from serving.  about an hour and change with driving + $6 – gas = $1 and a first. not bad.

now, in the style of the great blogger, cory driver, i will give you a few things of interest and be on my way.

grace like rain, sleepovers, and life

let me preface…i’m typing with a splint on my finger which is really annoying. i finally sucked up whatever was preventing me, realized the pain was only getting worse and went to the nurse to ask for a splint. i hate the silver thing and would rather tape a depressor on my fingers but it’s free and, it’s stopping me from bending my finger.   pain is less and i might heal…i’m still glad andrew and, eventually, dave and i got to toss the football about.  it was worth it.
and now down to business.

destined to be ugly

i normally kinda like my hands but not this week and i’m pretty sure they’re feeling the same towards me.

i already told you about the jammed fingers swelling up.  when i got to work monday morning, my kids thought it was very funny that i had two fat fingers and even more humorous that my ring was stuck.  when one went to the nurse for an ice pack, i was like, “eh…ask her for one for me too cause my fingers are starting to hurt.”
five minutes later, i got a phone call from a worried nurse offering her ring cutter.  i was like, “what!?  no!!”  after she interrogated me about the situation, i was able to assure her that she didn’t need to come down and check and that i’d let her know if it got worse.

things got worse but just for my hands, not the fingers.

swollen phalanges

i got a ring while i was in israel.
i probably wear it 3 or so days of the week.
it says “strength” in hebrew.  i chose that word so that every glance would remind me that God will always give me the strength to face whatever life (or my stupidity) brings.
i love my ring.

and, today, i realize that it’s a good thing i love the ring cause when i woke up, it was (and still is) stuck on my finger.
yup…good and stuck til the swelling goes down.

you see, yesterday, Read the rest of this entry »
